So I'm sitting here with my leg in a cast wondering how the Germany trip will go. I read some previous posts in attempts to gain some perspective on their experiences. I realize that even though our group may be participating in some of the same events, it will most likely be an entirely different trip. The attendees are different. Countries change. I am responsible for how my trip goes, both by attitude and by planning. I just hope that my fibula has mended well enough to not have to walk around Europe with a boot on my foot. I have never been disabled in Europe and I imagine that it would be an awful way to travel. For now, I'm trying to stay optimistic. But what will be, will be... and I'll have to work around whatever comes up regarding my injury. I guess this just reinforces the fact that you can't plan everything (which is both exciting and scary at the same time!)
I have been to Europe before, but I have never gone on a study abroad. Usually I am not a fan of traveling in groups, but I feel like this time will be different. We are veterinary students, united in our interests to learn and flourish as professionals. I am going into this trip hoping that we do not become exclusionary, and that group dynamics remain amiable.
Although I do not have my weekends all worked out, I am sure that things will fall into place. Part of the fun of traveling is not knowing what to expect, and then learning from your mistakes (or lack thereof). I am going to try prepare a bit differently for this trip as opposed to the others I've taken: I will pack practically, take a journal, and attempt to communicate better with those around me.
As far as my expectations go... I am looking forward to learning from my German host student, as well as from my fellow Aggie vet students. This will be a great opportunity to bond with, and learn more about, my peers! I am also excited for the planned activities, such as the behind-the-scenes zoo tours and the animal version of the Bodyworlds exhibit. Additionally, I am interested in finding out how I manage in instances where I travel alone. This will be a good opportunity to see how I do with my own navigations.
I cannot wait for all of our adventures!
