A little taste of Germany

Visited the Cologne Zoo earlier this week. They are currently hosting Animal Body World. It was amazing…and would have been a great field trip for anatomy class… My favorite exhibits were the ones that were made entirely of the vasculature. You can still tell what animal it is because capillaries reach every inch of the body and that is neat.

The Cologne Cathedral is awe-inspiring. I know we are here for veterinary medicine and that I am already in love with Notre Dame (which I can’t wait to see later this trip), but this cathedral could possibly end up being my favorite thing on this trip. The building is huge, the architecture is beautiful, and they let us on the roof and climb the tower! It survived the war because it was a landmark used by the planes.

We were in Berlin for the past two days. I’m disappointed we didn’t get to spend more time on the historical aspects of Berlin (I’ll just have to come back some day), and I am extremely grateful to Dr. Wasser for the bike tour to see as much of it as we did. Had a lot of fun and the Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, especially practicing with the blow dart. Was proud of myself for remembering how to load a dart, but disappointed with how poorly I taught it (I thought he would repeat it after I did). I really enjoyed hearing about some of the research that is done there, including making the 3D Ultrasound TV show and the “3D copy machine.” Got to see two zoos in one day, and that makes three for the week (it would be a sin, if I as President of ZEW, wasn’t excited about that!). I appreciated much more having the veterinarian at the Berlin give the tour, since he knows our interests and can answer our medical questions. It was too bad that Knut passed away before our trip; I would have loved to see him. And we visited our first vet school today. We did get to visit with the students somewhat, but mostly it was just tours. Seems comparable with a vet school in the U.S. to me.
