Friday we took a train and ferry to Norderney. After we arrived, we had our watwanderung, which was cold, but fun. We wandered around the tidal flats, learned about the animal and plant life, and explored what could be found below the muddy, sandy surface. Afterwards, we had a fabulous dinner at Weisse Dune, a beautiful restaurant. It’s definitely been my favorite meal so far.
Saturday we took a bike tour of Norderney where we saw many more things natural and man made. One of the things we saw was the sableschnabler (sp?), a rare bird with a thin, scooped beak that is seen infrequently on the island. Afterwards, Dr. Wasser began referring to us as the sableschnablers. We also got to visit the Waloseum, where they have the skeleton of a large sperm whale, and the seal center, where they rehabilitate injured or abandoned seals.
Afterwards, we had our free weekend. This time, a large group of us went to Munich. Munich is what the average American thinks when someone mentions Germany: large steins of beer, big pretzels, and lederhosen. However, all of these things are mostly limited to Bavaria, so don’t expect to find them elsewhere in Germany. We had a great time in Munich, and I wish we could have stayed longer! We tried many of the different local breweries, had some great food, took a tour of the city on bike, and visited Dachau. I recommend all of those things for those that want to take a trip to Munich or Bavaria!
