Today was the last day of our program in Europe. A couple of days ago we went to the Arnhem zoo, which was incredible! It was the most amazing zoo I have ever been to! they have the zoo set up in regions, so you can visit animals based on their natural environment, and we toured the rainforest. It is in a green house, with trees native to the south america's, there are birds, fruit bats, and iguanas loose in the "forest" and we walk on paths as if we were in a real rainforest! We walked through and saw some manatees and many different birds! It was such a neat experience. I hope that someday I can go back and see the rest of this zoo.
Unfortunately we were not able to see more of the zoo, because we went to a museum in the afternoon. We took a really nice bike ride through a national park to get to the museum, which was really cool, but the museum was not my favorite. It had a lot of abstract art, and the main artist liked to use beetles, and even his own blood for his art. It was very strange, and I personally would have preferred the zoo, but it was quite an experience to see such a different type of art.
We spent the rest of the week in the Netherlands visiting the vet school in Utrecht. It was the only vet school we visited that was AVMA accredited, so it was really neat to see. They have some incredible facilities, and they even gowned us up and showed us the whole surgery ward, which was very impressive! They also showed us the research facility, and we were trained in lab animal handling. We also had several interesting lectures, my favorite was on public health in Europe, the man had many interesting ideas on public health and industrial farming.
We are back in Berlin now, tomorrow we are going to go back to the Berlin zoo and actually get a good look around, and we will see the aquarium too, then Sunday we plan on going to the Culture Carnival! It should be a fun last few days in Europe! I can't believe it is over!
