5-28-11 cold, windy, but gorgeous Island of Norderney

Yesterday, we took a ferry and came to the absolutely exquisite Island of Norderney in the North Sea. This place is very beautiful, and there are apparently it is known for it's spas and "healing" water and air. As a matter of fact we had to pay a special tax, because we are going to be breathing the healing airs of the island. We went on a "wattwanderung" yesterday afternoon, and it was really neat. We were walking in the clay bottom of the North Sea, and if the weather had been nicer we would have been able to walk from the main land to the island during low tide, but we didn't get to do that. We did wander in the watt though, and we dug for Wattworms, and learned about the salt marshes. It was a really fun experience, like nothing you can get anywhere else!
Today we went on a bike tour of the island. It was VERY windy, but the island is so beautiful, and I think that this might have been my favorite part! We got to see almost the whole island on the bikes, which consists of dunes, beach, watt (north sea), salt marshes and the land. It was quite an experience! We then took a ferry back to the mainland and went to a seal rehabilitation center. It was really fun to see the seals, and learn about how they take care of the seals that are native to the mainland and islands of the North Sea.
We are now off on our free weekend, headed to Paris!!!!! I can't wait to explore this city!
