We are now in Utrecht! In the morning we had a great tour of the Equine clinic. Our tour guide was fun and energetic. She was extremely opinionated, had lots of ideas, and wasn’t always all that PC.
What was really so great about this tour was her ability to explain. I really felt as is for those two hours we were her actual students. It was fascinating was how well she was able to predict what a horse would need and how that horse might react in certain situations. I was reminded slightly of Temple Grandin’s ability to communicate with animals. Through this ability to predict an animal’s reaction, she was able to build the equine clinic in order to better ensure the safety of the horses. For example, she put the stocks for rectal palpations far enough away from the wall that in the event the horse decided to “abandon ship” by jumping out of the stocks he would not be harmed. I have never seen this done before and was very impressed.
Other aspects of the clinic’s design showed how modern this veterinary clinic is. For example, I was really excited to hear that each of the stables were grouped into a maximum of four horses together so that if there was an infectious diseases contamination, it could have been controlled fairly easily. All in all I would say that this was one of the best tours of the entire trip!
