While in the Netherlands, we went on a mud walking tour that was very interesting. The intertidal zone of the Wadden Sea was absolutely beautiful. The silence when out in the mud by the sea was also astonishing. The walking tour was rough for a number of people in our group, due mostly to shoe problems.
It appears we were misadvised that tennis shoes would be adequate for the walking tour. The guide chuckled at us, asking Dr. Wasser, “Are you sure they are up for this?” before we headed out into the horizon. By the end of the 6 km walk, several people had bleeding feet, we were covered in mud, and we were soaking wet from crossing the channel several times. But we all successfully made it, and I think we all now have a greater understanding of the unique environment that is sustained there. And the “One Free Consumption” coupon spent on our hot chocolate with whipped cream was definitely worth it.
After the mud tour we checked into our hotel here in Pieterburen. Thankfully, we had the opportunity to walk around and see the town before grabbing dinner and heading to bed. This town is amazingly quaint and has great character. Every house has beautifully manicured gardens, and many have horses, sheep, and other animals in their backyards. The character of this town is overwhelming. The local people here where intrigued when our bus pulled up in front of our hotel. And we caught many looking at us like we were foreigners… but, I guess we are... :)
Tomorrow is our visit to the seal rehabilitation center, and I am very excited about our activities there. I hope that we get some hands on experience with the seals, and get some good insight into their operation.
