Well I am all packed and am spending the last few days in San Antonio with my mom. I am very excited about the trip. I took a trip to Europe only once before. I was 17 and traveled to Portugal to ride dressage horses with some other members of my riding school. It was a fantastic experience, and this one will be too. I love traveling to places I've never been before, and learning about them. It's about time I visited Germany, since my great-grandparents were born and grew up there and my dad lived there for a few years .... I think in the 60s. Speaking of, he wants me to see if they still have "flippies" which are some sort of mug with a lid that beer used to be served in. He wants one.
I am most excited about visiting the zoo and the seal rehabilitation center. I really hope I can get close to an elephant. I adore elephants and have always wanted to meet one. Also, I am very interested to see exactly how one rehabilitates a seal. I always assumed they were not very nice, and I can't imagine a stress-free way to restrain one for treatment or examination. I have wildlife rehab experience myself (with raptors) and while I would not want to make a career as a wildlife vet (I like to eat, see) I plan to at least donate my time and services. I will also be in heaven at the Stud, because of my background in dressage. I will be dying to ride.
One of my favorite things about traveling is airports. What I like best about them is that everyone is sitting around reading books. I love to read and I carry a book everywhere, and it is really nice to not be the only one sitting in a waiting room or on a bench reading. I also like meeting "single serving friends" while traveling. Something about me seems to draw odd people, and I always end up with funny stories about the characters I meet in airports. One of my least favorite things about traveling is flying. I don't like sitting so close to people I don't know, and how the flight attendants run over your feet with their drink carts while you are trying to stretch out in the aisle. Also, I could do without the sense of impending doom I get right before take off and landing. I fly at least twice a year because most of my family lives in Pennsylvania, so you'd think I would get used to it ... but I don't.
Well, I guess I will see you all on Monday! Happy travels.
